Long before the well-publicized food recall, we were urging our customers to take great care in choosing the right food for their pets.
We encourage all pet owners to become pet food experts. For those of you who want to do some research into the issue, Whole Dog Journal (Whole Dog Journal) offers a wonderful annual pet food review of dry and canned options. Additionally, the Animal Protection Institute provides an extensive article about pet food (Get the Facts: What's Really in Pet Food).
As a quick guide, however, you should read the fine print on ingredient labels and avoid foods with ingredient lists that include the words: By-products, Digest, BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, Propylene Glycol or contain generic meat sources.
It’s also a good idea to avoid wheat in all forms because it is a common allergen.
Finally, corn is a common ingredient in many inferior foods and it is therefore best to feed a food that does not contain corn.
