We encourage all pet owners to become pet food experts. For those of you who want to do some research into the issue, Whole Dog Journal offers a very informative annual pet food review of dry and canned options. Websites like Truth About Pet Food and The Dog Food Project are fantastic resources for pet food advocacy and education. Additionally, Born Free USA provides an extensive article about pet food called Get the Facts: What's Really in Pet Food.

As a quick guide, however, you should read the fine print on ingredient labels and avoid foods with ingredient lists that include the words: By-products, Digest, BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, Propylene Glycol or that contain generic meat sources (i.e., 'poultry', 'meat', etc.).

It’s also a good idea to avoid wheat in all forms because it is a common allergen.

Finally, corn is a common ingredient in many inferior foods and it is therefore best to feed a food that does not contain corn.
